Build Desirable Skills
Law schools don’t require specific courses or majors, but certain academic skills are essential for success. As you piece together your courses, major, and extracurricular activities, focus on opportunities that will help you build these skills.
There is no particular course, activity, or experience that is guaranteed to "look better" for law school admissions. Our academic advising team can help you create a personalized plan that suits your strengths and goals.
Problem-Solving | Critical Reading | Writing | Oral Communication/Listening | Research | Task Organization/Management
According to the American Bar Association, these key skills are vital for a career in law. Visit the American Bar Association's Legal Education Resources for more detailed information.
Pursue your passions.
Choosing a Major
There is no specific major that law schools require or even strongly recommend. At UCSB, students from nearly every field have successfully gained admission to law schools across the country.
Pick a major that genuinely interests and challenges you. If you’re thinking about a double major or adding multiple programs, remember that this won’t necessarily boost your chances with law school admissions. Only pursue these paths if you’re passionate about the subjects and ready for the extra work.
Honesty | Competence | Commitment to Justice
The American Bar Association emphasizes that legal professionals should serve others with honesty, competence, and a commitment to justice. As you prepare for law school, seek opportunities to support your community—whether through volunteering, internships, campus involvement, or part-time work. These experiences can help you develop essential skills for law school while enhancing your résumé. However, there’s no specific checklist of activities you need to follow. Explore options that resonate with you, and consult a Pre-Law advisor to find what fits best.
